A classic old-school Italian-style spaghetti sauce inspired by the beloved recipe made famous through Heloise.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup finely chopped onions
- 1 pound ground beef
- 4 strips bacon, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, chopped fine
- 1 bay leaf, chopped fine
- 1 tbsp salt
- fresh ground pepper to taste
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
- 2 oz red wine
- 2 (15 oz) cans of whole tomatoes or tomato sauce
- 1 (6oz) can tomato paste
- 1 cup water
- 1 carrot, finely chopped
Instructions
- Warm the olive oil in a large Dutch oven over low heat.
- Add butter and onions and cook until lightly golden.
- Add the beef and bacon and cook until browned.
- Stir in garlic, parsley, seasonings, wine, tomatoes, and tomato paste.
- Simmer slowly for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

This rich, slow-simmered sauce pairs perfectly with spaghetti and garlic bread.
